Chapter Seven

Evan walked into the living room to find Anna curled up in the comfortable chair with the blanket securely around her. The empty eggnog glass was sitting on the table next to her and there was a slight smile on her pretty pink lips.

His gut clenched at the sight of her relaxed face, her body at ease. He knew he should wake her. It wasn’t safe to sleep after hitting your head, but he didn’t have the heart to do it. She looked as if she didn’t get a lot of rest in her life.

His mother dropped a dish, a loud bang coming from the kitchen, and Anna barely stirred.

“Sorry,” his mother called out.

“I’m taking Anna upstairs. I think it’s more important for her to rest than eat right now,” he said.

“That’s a good idea. I’ll set some food aside for both of you,” Judy replied with an innocent smile. He had no doubt his mother was matchmaking. If only she knew Anna was already his wife. Maybe it was in name only, but he planned on changing that very soon.

It was utterly ridiculous for him to have any feelings for this woman who was little more than a stranger to him, but from the very first moment he’d laid eyes on her, he’d been drawn in.

He seemed to constantly be that way in her presence, but there was more going on than just lust. He might not be willing to admit it out loud, but he felt something for this beautiful woman.

As he reached the top of the staircase, he heard his mother call the family for dinner. Normally he’d be the first one to the table, but as he moved toward his room he had only one hunger needing fed at the moment.

He gently laid Anna on his bed, her blonde hair spreading out over his pillow in a way that made him desperately want to mess it up. He controlled his desire, moved to the foot of the bed, took off her shoes, then pulled the covers up around her.

She seemed restless, mumbling in her sleep and reaching out an arm as if seeking him, then settled back down. Evan knew better than to try to take off any of her clothes. He considered himself a good man, but he only had so much willpower, and stripping Anna of her clothes would take more than he could muster right now.

Instead, he turned off the lights, stripped down to his boxers, and climbed in next to her. Evan couldn’t remember the last time he’d taken a nap, but
